Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called on the party's senators to block the funding of ICE in an upcoming vote after officers shot and killed a man in Minneapolis on Saturday.

"We have a responsibility to protect Americans from tyranny. DHS just shot a man in broad daylight two weeks after they shot a mother in the face without consequence. They need our votes to continue. We cannot give it to them. Every Senator should vote NO," the lawmaker said in a social media publication.

She was answering to a post from NBC News journalist Sahil Kapur, who recalled that DHS legislation funding the agency "at current levels without policy restrictions is in the Senate and needs 60 votes to pass."

"Americans are being killed in the street by their government. Our Constitution is being shredded and our rights are dissolving. Resist. Senate Dems should block ICE funding this week. Activate the National Guard. We can and must stop this," AOC added in another publication.

The made the call after the incident on Saturday, which comes just weeks after the shooting of Renee Good in the same city.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that agents fired "defensive shots" after a man with a gun approached them and "violently resisted" their attempts to disarm him.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara called for calm from the public and law enforcement agents after the shooting. "Our demand today is for those federal agencies that are operating in our city to do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country demands," he said.

"We urge everyone to remain peaceful. We recognize that there is a lot of anger and a lot of questions around what has happened, but we need people to remain peaceful in the area."
