A top Trump official reportedly said the U.S. will have Venezuela hold elections within two years, according to a new report.

Concretely, The Wall Street Journal detailed that U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told executives there will be elections in 18 to 24 months.

The outlet noted that, however, officials in Venezuela's interim regime are hoping to wait out Trump to stay in power.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez is looking to outlast Trump's focus by caving on demands that benefit her, like restructuring the oil industry, but slow-walk political concessions that would actually bring about change in the South American country.

"As soon as they think they have the upper hand, they'll tell us to go away," warned Rep. Carlos Rodriguez, a vocal critic of the regime. "They're hoping to wait out Trump, that's why we can't allow that."

One example of this premise is the announcement that the regime will shut down an infamous detention center known for keeping and torturing political prisoners. Rodriguez also announced an amnesty for all political prisoners. It encompasses all periods of political violence since 1999 to date, she said.

The goal, she added, is "repairing the wounds that political confrontation from a place of violence, extremism, has left in Venezuelans and promote peaceful living." However, the amnesty won't apply to those accused of "crimes against humanity," and the definition of those crimes has not been detailed.

As for the Helicoide, the infamous detention center, it will be turned into a social, sports, cultural and commercial center for police officers and their families, as well as neighboring communities.

Elsewhere in the report, the WSJ noted that the Trump administration's involvement in Venezuela could become a liability for Trump, as most American voters surveyed in a recent poll conducted by the outlet reject it. Concretely, the disapprove of Trump's engagement abroad instead of focusing on the U.S. economy.
